I agree with your reasons to do this side work. I do a similar type of work on my off time with micro stock photography (iStockPhoto.com). I've been doing it since 2003 and have about 19000 online sales.

Just like you said, you work on when you like, any time of day. Last night I uploaded 4 photos from a photo shoot last week, but it was at least a month before that since I did any active work there. But I consistently make a few hundred $$ monthly on residuals.

The key thing, just as you pointed out, is producing quality work, and having the income that comes from it be residual. As I do slowly add to the portfolio, I slowly earn more money ongoing, even though I don't put much time in on it.

BTW, iStockPhoto does have stock video now, something you might consider. With your viewer base, you can link to your videos online, and increase your sales, but also earn money off referring people to the site who sign up and buy download credits.

Hi Izzy,
your site has fascinated and inspired me for a long time. Indeed, I'm on the cusp of releasing my first podcasts (very soon) and am hoping to leverage audio podcasting into video casting --> my end goal.

In order to do this, I've been exploring some of the different ways of monitizing my podacst and have been listening to several podacasts about how to do that. Adsense is one of many strategies I've discovered and I was surprised to hear that you were doing well through it.

I'd be curious to hear your take on some of the other strategies discussed: like affilate programs, the donation button (which you have), the eBook, advertising space in the pod/video cast etc...

Anyhow, keep up the wonderful work and I look forward to hearing more from you soon!
-Taural

Matt,

Very kind of you to say these things. Naturally I wish you the best of luck as you keep learning all you want about video and photography.

If you have suggestions or requests for future topics, please make sure you submit them...

I look forward to checking out your work, too.

Thanks,

Israel

I have been following your pod cast for 7-8 months and have downloaded all episodes to my ipod. I am a web designer and want to get into video and production. Your and your father's video has taken my still photography to a new level and I can't wait to get FCP and learn how to edit. Really sorry to hear about your daughter, her singing on the microphone test is the cutest thing I've seen online. Please keep it up and keep it clear and simple all your work is so easy to understand, it's very inspiring.
